A masterclass in the art of insitu concrete...

Barbara Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield - Designed by David Chipperfield

I went to a meeting in recently where we are doing a medical centre surgery extension, four hours each way up the M1. On the way back I decided take a break and go and see the newly opened Barbara Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield (about 10 minutes off junction 39 of the M1)

Well worth a visit if you are going past. Designed by David Chipperfield and set on the waters edge of the river Calder it is a master class in the art of insitu concrete with walls finished to a fine polish. Inside the staircase is clad in what at first sight looks like black marble but is actually stained MDF, a very clever use of simple materials.

Well worth a diversion off a trip up North - there is even a good Cafe at the gallery. Go there via Thornes Road, don't be deterred by driving through an industrial estate, it is worth while. - Martin Scott of brp architects
